Mangalore, July 29 : About 50 activists of pro-Hindu outfit Hindu Jagarana Vedike, barged into a house in Mangalore on Saturday and in the guise of moral policing assaulted the inmates — six girls and seven boys — who were partying.
The Hindu Jagran Vedike activists dragged the girls by their hair, beat them up and tried to molest them.
Police said the students were from prestigious colleges in and around Mangalore.
All 13 of them have been detained by police for questioning.
Local TV channels aired visuals of Saturday’s incident that took place at 7.30 pm in Padeel, 3 km from Mangalore city.
One of the boys was seen trying to convince the attackers that they were celebrating a birthday and pleading with them to let go of the girls, but in vain.
The house belongs to a lady who rents it out as a homestay. Homestay is a form of tourism that allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family to learn the local lifestyle.
Mangalore police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and other officials rushed to the spot and took five activists including a BJP corporator Mohan Padeel into custody.
Hindu Jagran Vedike state president Jagadish Karanth said: “There are some people who are running prostitution rackets in the name of love and tarnishing the culture of our nation.
“There is an administrative failure in Mangalore and Police Commissioner did not act upon many complaints regarding such illegal activities,” he said.
Jagadish Shenava, Mangalore area president of Hindu Jagran Vedike supported the incident.Congress and CPM workers held protests outside the Mangalore rural police station, and demanded action against the Hindu Jagran Vedike activists.
A young woman was slapped when she tried to question the members of the outfit. Others who pleaded ‘Please leave us, we did not do anything’, were dragged and forced to show their faces to the camera.
Jagran leader Subhash admitted his outfit was involved in the raid. DYFI state vice president and DK president Muneer Katipalla demanded members of saffron outfits be arrested under Goonda Act.
This is the second such incident here after January 24, 2009 attack on a pub by Srirama Sene. The incident has come as a huge embarrassment to the ruling BJP as opposition party leaders targeted it for its failure to check pro-Hindu activists and their moral policing.
Condemning the attack, Deputy Chief Minister R Ashoka, who is in-charge of Home, directed police to arrest immediately those behind the incident.
Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said the government would initiate stern action after receiving a report on the incident.
Mangalore city mayor Gulzar Banu condemned the manhandling of the girls during the raid by the outfit.
“I am saddened by this incident in which girls were manhandled. Such moral policing can only bring a bad name to Mangalore city. The activists should have brought the party to the notice of the authorities instead of taking things into their own hands,” she said.
Jagarana Vedike leader, Subhash, denied the outfit had assaulted any of the guests at the party.
“Similar parties have been held at this resort for several days and although the local people have complained about them to the local authorities, nothing was done. Today our workers went to the resort and brought the party being held there to the notice of the police. But we did not assault anybody,” he claimed.
A resident of Padil confirmed that similar parties had been held at the resort recently.
“Today people near the resort noticed that boys and girls in their early twenties were misbehaving at a party there.
The news spread and some people went inside to take them to task. We don’t want such illegal activities and parties in our village,” he said.Police Commissioner Singh and other police officials were not receiving calls for a clear picture of the incident.
Youth Congress gherao police station
The youth Congress party workers gheraoed the Pandeshwar Police station on Saturday night demanding the release of victims, who were assaulted by the moral brigade.
’Cong youth president Mithun rai told that the victims had taken permission from their parents and had gathered at the resort for a birthday party.
Till they are released and culprits arrested, we will not move from this place,’’ he said. He said Youth Cong will call its core committee meeting on Sunday to decide about all college bandh on Monday.
What right they have got to take law into their own hands. They had gathered with permission and nothing immoral as alleged was going on,’’ Rai added.
Police sources said the main culprits have not been arrested, but six, including the local corporator was taken into custody for protesting near the resort at Padil.
eb, general manager of Hard Rock, a swanky pub on St. Marks Road in the heart of the city, said: "Visitors' security is our responsibility and we have increased the security drill."
Anand Joshi, manager of a small and popular Windsor Pub at Vasantha Nagar, said the management was planning to increase the number of security guards at the pub.
"We will take all steps for security of our clients," he said.
The common reaction of both the young and the elderly in Bangalore to the Mangalore attack is that "Talibanisation" of Karnataka should not be allowed.
"Attacking women in the name of moral policing is no sign of a civilised society," said Donna Fernandes, social activist and member of Vimochana, a Bangalore-based women's organisation.
"We're citizens of a democratic society and do not have to follow the diktats of moral police. I highly condemn the attacks and hope justice will prevail," she said.
For well-known fashion designer and choreographer Prasad Bidappa, "This is like turning Karnataka into another Taliban."
"I condemn Talibanisation of Karnataka and ask the government to punish the culprits to avoid further happening of such incidents," he said.
"Such an incident is unacceptable in a civil society and we need to empower womenfolk, so that they can fight back any attacker who try to physically assault and harm them. I would suggest that women should also be armed with weapons for their personal safety," added Bidappa.
In the Mangalore incident, a group of 40 activists of Sri Rama Sene abused, slapped and pulled hair of several young women Saturday at a pub, claiming these women were inulging in obscene dancing and violating traditional Indian values.
So far, 27 people including Sene state vice-president Prasad Attavara, have been arrested and charged with outraging the modesty of women, rioting, assault and unlawful assembly.
Hunt is on for Sena leader Dinakar Shetty, who has defended the attack.
Young India vents anger over Mangalore incident on internet
New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) Young Indians angry about the attack on women in a pub in Karnataka's Mangalore town are giving vent to their ire on the internet with critical comments on blogs and furious responses to the video of the incident on YouTube.
"On a day when India celebrated its 60th Republic Day, the news (of the Mangalore pub incident) that made the headlines was shocking, awful and shameful to hear as an Indian," said a comment on a blog.
"I am stunned to see that in a democratic nation, where every individual has the right to live the way he or she wants, such incidents happen," the blogger added.
On Saturday, a group of 40 activists of the Sri Rama Sena barged into the pub Amnesia - The Lounge in Mangalore. They bashed up a group of young women and men, claiming the women were "violating traditional Indian values". The girls were punched and their hair pulled by the self-styled moral brigade.
The video of the incident, which was uploaded on the popular video sharing website YouTube, has become one of the most watched clips on the internet.
Of the scores of comments posted in response to the video is that of a 22-year-old user Chaitu100 who asked: "Spoiling Indian culture?! So is this Indian culture - beating up women?"
Bangalorebeats, a blogger, wrote: "Now who gives them (the activists) the right to moral police others? Hindu religion professes respect to women and not to harass them. If one carefully reads the Veda or ancient scriptures then one can understand that women had much liberty in ancient India".
Aarti Sharma, a Kolkata based BPO employee, said: "What makes them men enough to raise their hand on women? This is absolute violation of a person's right, a crime on the pretext of tradition. Do they even know what tradition means?"
"No one has a right to take law into their hands. Is beating girls not a violation of our tradition? The culprits should not be allowed to get away lightly after what they have dared to do," said Rahul, a Delhi based software engineer.
